Usage of antibodies / storage of antisera and antibodies
Q:
What further processing of antibodies is possible?
A:
- labelling with different markers (enzymes, fluorescence, gold and biotin)
- fragmentation and preparation of F(ab) or F(ab)2 fragments
- preparation of antibody-coated columns for antigen purification
- coating of ELISA-plates
- searching for pairs (capturing and detecting antibodies) for developing assays

Q:
Storage of antisera and antibodies
A:
The antisera and/or antibodies are preserved with 0.02% Thimerosal (comparable to Sodium azide) and can be stored at 4°C for a maximum of one month, either in one batch or aliquoted.
The following conditions are recommended for longer storage:
Antisera:
- aliquoting and freezing at –20 degrees
Antibodies:
- aliquoting and freezing with 10% glycerol at –20 degrees
- aliquoting and storing with 30% glycerol at –20 degrees (does not freeze)
- aliquoting and lyophilising and then storing at 4 degrees
As a general rule, repeated thawing and freezing should be avoided.
